Walking
To experience nature at it's best, take a stroll along the 350km of walking paths with borders lined with wild flowers, in and around the Hohe Tauern National Park. During the mid summer months, the lift system operates taking you above the tree line to some breathtaking scenery. With walks for the modest walker to the intrepid alpine mountaineer, the Gasteinertal caters for everyone. A detailed local walking guide in English is available from Tourist Information or local bookshops for 6 Euro.
The well signposted walking tours guide you through the valley and to one of the many mountain huts where you can stop, take in the view and have a hearty snack.

Climbing & Via Ferrata
Being in the Alps, there is obviously plenty of climbing routes in and around Gastein, from via ferrata, to easy short routes for beginners, to longer hard routes for the more experienced.
There is a new climbing area in the centre of Bad Gastein, next to the Silver Bullet Bar. There is another climbing area in Klammstein at the entrance to the valley where you can find sport routes for all abilities. If you're new to the sport, we can put you in contact with a local instructor.
In the last few years, several new Via Ferrata's (Klettersteig in German) have been built on Schlossalm above Bad Hofgastein. We've tried them and they're great! If you've never tried Via Ferrata, its a great way to experience the thrill of climbing in relative safety. Take a guide or try it for yourself!
If you crave the height and the real climbing experience, only 30 minutes drive north of Bad Gastein is the spectacular summit of Hochkönig. The towering peaks draw climbers for all over, enticed by spectacular climbing routes, the famous Königsjodler via ferrata and mountain huts. With some routes traditional and sport routes over 500m long, we recommend a visit to the area. You'll find the climbing guide in the apartment!
For further information, visit the Bergsteigen Website. We can recommend a guide if you decide to visit the area.
Cycling & Mountain Biking
The Gastein Valley caters for the cyclist and genuine mountain bike enthusiast. Whether you want to cycle down the valley on many of the cycle tracks that follow the river, or race down through the forest on challenging trails, the valley has everything you need. Most shops offering ski hire in the winter turn into bike hire shops during the summer months. You can also take your bike in the lift at Dorfgastein and come back down their purpose built trail.

Playing golf in the theatre that is the Gasteinertal itself is fascinating, with courses that blend harmoniously into the landscape at the foot of the mountains.
Established in 1960, the club in Bad Gastein is one of Austria's oldest and most traditional golf clubs. The course itself is enticing, hilly and level fairways alternate effortlessly with each other, around old trees and little mountain streams.
